The One Box program provides Australian families in need with a free weekly box of fresh fruit, vegetables, and bread over the entire school year. Each box has an approximate retail value of $23 and is distributed via public primary schools and community hubs, creating connections between the recipients and their communities.

To ensure the program is effective and efficient, in 2020 The One Box established a research partnership that has resulted in the development of a framework to measure and communicate the program’s impact. The social impact framework was delivered in 2021 by the Monash Business School research team. The social impact framework offers a holistic understanding of the value created by the fresh food relief program and comprises three key themes: Nutrition and Wellbeing, Community Building and Support, and Financial Benefits.

MEET THE PRESENTERS:

Emily Wild has over 20 years of experience working in the community sector. During this time, 13 years have been spent working in the food relief space. In her role at SecondBite, during the 7 years she managed the community relationships, volunteers, and food procurement.

In 2017, Emily took on the exciting role at The Fruit Box Group as Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, heading up The One Box pilot program. In 2018 The One Box became a registered charity and since then Emily has managed the incredibly growth of the program. In 2023, the national program has a target to regularly assist upwards of 2,500 households experiencing hardship across Australia.

Paul Thambar is an Associate Professor at Monash Business School with research interests in measuring value and impact in alternate organisations (Not-For-Profits, Coops and Mutuals). With colleagues, he has been engaged in a long term research collaboration with The One Box to develop impact measurement of their food security program. Paul has worked in industry prior to academia and brings a theoretical and practical focus to his research on value and impact measurement.
